 Keeping Families Together

 August 2007

I would like to thank everyone who has donated a back pack or school items over the summer to help support the families in need and help prepare their youngsters for a new school year.  My region has showed overwhelming support from those involved through our adopted congregations as well as many other community members.

As the fall begins, I am calling on all of you again to help keep our families in tack.  The goal of Covenant to Care for Children is to provide direct assistance to Connecticut’s children who are at high-risk, neglected or abused.  By providing items such as clothing, furniture and food vouchers the program can help assure families will be kept in tack or that siblings may be placed together instead of in separate foster homes.

By donating Stop and Shop gift cards to these families you will be making a huge difference in their daily lives.  Children will not go hungry and will be in better health and mind set to attend school rather than being so hungry they can’t concentrate.  It is very hard for many families to come up with all the basic needs to provide for their children on a monthly basis.  Bonita Robinson of the Department of Children & Families (DCF) explains: “The Department of Children and Families often has to remove children from neglectful situations and place them with families on an emergency basis.  Thus, until monies are disbursed, it may present a hardship for families to get food.  Also, families that still have their children at home, but have cases with DCF, often run out of food towards the end of the month, and because DCF wants to keep the families intact as much as possible, we would need assistance in being able to get these families food.”

By providing gift cards it will alleviate the parent or care taker’s stress and give them the opportunity to offer a healthy meal to their family as well as a chance to sit down as a family and bond at meal time.  By feeding a child you are not only nourishing their body, but nourishing their lives.

Please contact your Adopted congregation to donate or contact Megan Cardinal at 203-574-0365 for more information.
