The stain glass windows in St. John’s Parish Hall in Bridgeport made a beautiful background for displaying recycled prom dresses. Shown above are a small number of literally hundreds of dresses available on April 4 and 5, 2008 for selection by girls who otherwise would not be able to afford to go to their high school proms. All dresses that were left went to the Community Closet in Bridgeport and are expected to find new owners.

The young women, many of whom came with their social workers, went through whichever rack held dresses in their size. After making some selections, they went to an adjacent room to try them on.

While we are not allowed to photograph DCF children under 18, we were able to show the back of this young woman who is over 18 and agreed to have her picture taken.  She had lots of help from volunteers and her social worker in selecting and fitting her dress. Everyone agreed that this yellow dress was the most flattering.

After choosing a dress, the young women picked out shoes, evening purses, and jewelry to match their choice. They were also offered free samples of cosmetics.
