Spring Prom Dress Flyer
______________________________________________
When Alberta Vargas began this program for St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, she worked with St. John’s Episcopal of Bridgeport, using their Parish Hall to display the dresses. She reached out to Covenant to Care for Children for help in collecting prom dresses from other churches in the region, and also as a means of reaching all the local social workers. Wilton Congregational delivered 19 dresses and accessories that first year.
Meanwhile, The Wilton Woman's Club and a group of high school students had begun a program to collect gently worn prom dresses for girls at Harding High in Bridgeport. They had collected more than 300 dresses but could not find a venue for displaying them. Genia Meinhold read in the eNews about St. Paul’s Episcopal Church’s outreach volunteer work with Covenant to Care for Children. Everyone decided to join forces.
The stained glass windows in St. John’s Parish Hall in Bridgeport make a beautiful background for displaying recycled prom dresses. Literally hundreds of dresses are available on April 1, 2, and 3, 2011 for selection by young women, who otherwise would be unable to afford to go to their high school prom. All dresses which might be unclaimed go to the Community Closet in Bridgeport and all of the dresses are expected to find new owners.
The young women, many of whom come with their social workers, go through whichever rack hold dresses in their size. After making some selections, they retire to an adjacent room to try them on.
After choosing a dress, the young women pick out shoes, evening purses, and jewelry to match their choice. They are also offered free samples of cosmetics.
