Shelton Residents Sent Children Back-to-School in
Style
Luther’s Garage in
downtown Shelton and Covenant to Care for Children,
a statewide organization that helps needy children,
recently teamed up to collect book bags and
back-to-school supplies for Shelton and other area
children.
During the month of
August on a daily basis, one giving person after
another visited Luther’s Garage with their arms full
of school supplies and new book bags. The storage
area was packed to the ceiling from the generosity
of others.
“It is truly amazing how
this community comes together to help others,”
states John Landry, owner of Luther’s Garage. “I am
so glad my business is located in Shelton .”
On August 21st,
all the donations were picked up by Meral Prewitt
and Megan Cardinal, Regional Coordinators for
Covenant to Care for Children and the Adopt A Social
Worker Program. All of the supplies were given to
social workers who filled the book bags with age
appropriate supplies for the children of the
families they serve.
As a result of this
wonderful charity drive to help needy children
prepare for back to school, 3,570 total items were
collected totaling approximately $6,718 in book bags
and supplies. A total of 226 children were
assisted. The donated item and Bridgeport
Department of Children and Families (DCF) offices
for distribution.
Luther’s Garage and Covenant to
Care for Children thanks
everyone who took the time to
buy supplies or donate a gift
card for this cause. Children
sometimes don’t want to go to
school because they don’t have
what other children have,” said
Landry. “This outpouring of
generosity makes a huge
difference for children’s self
esteem and we were glad to
coordinate it with the people in
our community who care about
keeping children in school,” he
concluded.
During the remainder of this
year, Luther’s will be
conducting a 2nd
Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive,
1st Annual Change of
Season Fall & Winter Clothes and
Laundry Detergent Drive and 2nd
Annual Holiday Toy Drive.
