We have a big
job ahead and it will take each of us in our unique roles within the
Covenant to Care for Children family to make our vision a reality.
Our Board was thorough and thoughtful in their approval of a new
strategic plan during our annual meeting. This is an imperfect
document but it has the seeds of positive results.
Take a moment, read our mission, and vision statements slowly and with intention. They have not changed; they have been affirmed. This is who and what we are as an organization. In Connecticut, one in ten children lives in poverty. That is 85,000 children waiting for us to bring them hope and possibilities for their future. There is so much work to do and the only way to do it is one child at a time, one need at a time, one gesture of caring, one word of kindness. I have found Connecticut to be a place of extremes and this is especially true for our youngest community members. If, together, we can make a real difference in the lives of these 85,000 children we will change everything, we will change the world. If we can bring together all faiths to make this difference we will change everything, we will change the world. What we do is not just about the children of Connecticut, though that is enough. It is also about how our actions, our small efforts to help these children know they are cared for, how these actions affect us. Every time we are part of a positive moment for a child, no matter how removed we are from the child, we are changed. A new friend of mine recently made the statement that I “really think big.” He is right, I do, but only because I can see the reality of what we do making a difference, a big difference. History is not about big events or single people, it is about sustained effort, it is about the stand each of us takes in our journey, not the stand in the moment. It is about the joining of people in those sustained efforts. This is where real change finds its roots and where true progress is made. Every act counts toward the whole, every gesture echoes, every stumble is an opportunity to stand again and move forward. I believe that collectively we can each offer a critical piece to achieving a world where each child has a safe place to live and a caring family. I believe that Covenant to Care for Children, through its programs, values, its volunteers, it sister agencies and partnerships, its funders, and leadership, its program and administrative staff will make the difference, tip the scales, and ultimately achieve our vision for our kids. My covenant to each of you is that I will work toward the vision of Covenant to Care for Children using what little skill I possess, and our mission as my guide. My hope is that you will continue to work with me and with Covenant to Care for Children using your skills, resources and our mission as your guide. Thank you for all your work during this now ending year, and thank you for the amazing year we are about to have. |
