Rebecca's Mentoring Story

Recently Rebecca was online and saw a Hartford “Fox TV News” invitation to submit a description to a program called “Paying It Forward”.  The main idea was to share about someone who has made a difference in their lives. Their story was chosen, and aired on WTIC TV July 3rd.

Rebecca was a single teen Mom trying to graduate from Hartford HS when she met Carle.“ Throughout the years, Carle has really stuck to my side, almost in a mother role as I fought my way through, succeeding against the odds before me. Under her love and care, I was able to graduate high school, graduate college, enlist in the Armed Forces  and maintain my life as a single mother who beat the statistical odds. She went above and beyond her 10 hour a month mentoring duty requirement and I credit all of my successes to her,” said Rebecca.

Carle attends Asylum Hill Congregational Church in Hartford, Connecticut.

Going on 13

Going On 13

GOING ON 13 is a new documentary film that presents an alternate and perhaps more realistic view of girls and their families in our urban communities.  Developed and created by social workers, we encourage you to consider screening the film in all of the ways that you can. Doing so will ignite a dialogue and support our efforts to 1) Create a space for girls to share their experiences of puberty - as experts on their own lives; 2) Engage girls and those who care about them in an inter-generational conversation; and 3) Inspire communities to develop children's advocacy programs, policies and spaces that listen to the real needs of real girls.

We want you to USE the film - in your classrooms and school districts, in your universities, in your home, and in your after-school programs - with girls, your students, your staff, your local politicians and your friends and family.

January is National Mentoring Month

National Mentoring Month aims to raise awareness of mentoring programs in various forms; recruit individuals to mentor, especially at mentoring agencies that have a waiting list of young people; and promote the rapid growth of mentoring by recruiting organizations--businesses, faith communities, schools and community groups--to encourage their constituents to become mentors to young people.

The Connecticut Mentoring Partnership, a program of the Governor's Prevention Partnership, is leading a statewide effort to recruit more mentors.

It doesn't take special skills
to mentor a child --
just a willingness to listen,
offer encouragement
